Golcar United secured their spot in the NCEL Premier playoffs with a 3-0 victory over Frickley Athletic at the Skye Direct Stadium.
A George Doyle brace in the first half and an Alfie Wilkinson header with 25 minutes to go means The Weavers need just one point from their final two league games to mathematically secure themselves at least one home playoff game.
The Village showed why they were prolonging their season with a dominant performance that oozed attacking class.
The hosts were instantly on the front foot against a Frickley side who had lost four of their last five league games before tonight, and within six minutes, Golcar were ahead.
A brilliant ball over the top by Kiero Lawrence found George Doyle, and our number nine scored his 25th league goal of the season by expertly chesting the ball into his stride to slot the ball past the onrushing William Sykes in the Frickley net.
Within minutes, Frickley should have had an equaliser. Shane Killock was dispossessed by Frickley’s striker Luke Hinsley, but he got the ball stuck under his feet when trying to round Harry Stead, and his scuffed effort went wide.
Despite that scare, Golcar dominated the rest of the half, and Doyle doubled his tally and Golcar’s lead 15 minutes before the interval. A loose touch by Alfie Wilkinson was followed up by a brilliant backheel that found Callum Petch on the right side of the box. Petch drilled the ball across the box, and Doyle slid the ball into the back of the net to conclude a fabulous passage of play.
Around the hour mark, Frickley had two good chances in very quick succession. Harrison Rowley saw his header across the goal go just wide of the far post, whilst Thomas Alngohuro’s effort was smothered by Stead.
Them chances woke Golcar back up and they were soon back to playing some of the scintillating football they had done for most of the game. Joe Clegg’s low-driven effort from the edge of the box struck the post, but minutes later, Golcar got their third of the evening.
Oli Russon’s superb free kick was expertly headed in by Alfie Wilkinson for him to score in successive midweek games- just this goal was a little less dramatic…
The hosts should have had more in the final stages of the game. Sam Pashley had a free header in the centre of the box was straight at Sykes, whilst Frickley’s number one made a brilliant save from Kai Phillip’s close-range effort right at the death.
The conclusion of Golcar’s final home league match of the regular season was met by warm applause, but with a huge sense of anticipation in the air. With a cup final and now the playoffs on the horizon, if The Village play like they did tonight, many champagne corks may be popping off in HD7 in the near future.
